Antioxidants in fruit



Science has found that simple plants contain antioxidants which are powerful compounds able to help ward off cancer and heart disease for example. These phytonutrients are able to protect us from other illnesses as well as many diseases. To date, scientists have managed to index almost a 1,000 of these unusual compounds; these protective plant compounds are an emerging area of health and nutrition, with new research reported almost daily. There has been a whole host of discoveries made into the properties of these phytonutrients; pomegranates for example, contain many different properties whilst blueberries have compounds which affect the aging process.

But is doesn’t stop there as blueberries also contain a lower sugar content than most other fruits as well as many antioxidants. Currently the most efficient and pleasurable way to get the benefits of these fruits is by drinking their juice; regular consumption can help our circulation and increase our ability to combat illness. Although they help to prevent disease, the powerful antioxidants contained in these fruits can also help fight disease and infections as well. The old saying about an apple-a-day couldn’t be truer with evidence that they can help prevent the chance of heart conditions occurring.

Now citrus fruits too are showing that they have a use with a number of beneficial phytochemicals contained in them. Tart cherries for instance have a number of properties which work together to help people who have arthritis, gout and fibromyalgia. Of course we already now about the benefits of certain vitamins and minerals, which have been available for some time. Blackberries, mulberries, and especially blueberries are rich in powerful antioxidants like resveratrol.

Many people with other aging conditions prevalent around the world, for instance: heart attacks, stroke and Alzheimer’s can all benefit when these compounds are used. The benefit of tomatoes has been in the news recently with the hopes that it contains anti-cancer properties as well as those that can help prevent heart disease. Although quite large quantities are needed so using tomato juice, puree or sauce which are all concentrates has been found to be the best way to increase the level of the antioxidants in our food. Nature has also blessed the watermelon with phytonutrients; in fact the most important discovered to date!
